A Note From Brooke: Let's Take Care of the Things We Love

"How can we cultivate and tend to our relationships down to their very cores? How can we treat our own bodies and minds and spirits with attention and kindness and intention?"

A Note From Brooke: Let's Take Care of the Things We Love

Hi friends,

You can’t avoid it: the Valentine’s Day marketing creep is in full swing. I have a soft spot for the holiday—it was my mother’s favorite—but these days I’m likely to be found scrambling in the drugstore aisles at the last minute, hoping there’s a card left that’s not just for your dog. (My new plan: skip cards, give tequila.)

This year, I’ve been thinking about what it means to really take care of ourselves. I genuinely believe that we can’t care for others without proactively caring for ourselves. (Remember the age-old saying: put on your own mask before helping others put on theirs.)

Before I started Commence, I didn’t even know that scalp care was a thing—did you?! I had never been in a lab, and then I got the chance to visit and see how our products are made. I learned that there is no hair care without scalp care. You have to start…at the start. Speaking of starting over…

I couldn't possibly send this note without talking about a community that is so near and dear to my heart—LA, I weep for you. I’m devastated. I've lived in and loved LA for so long. If you’re looking for a way to help, I’m supporting the Female Founder Collective,  Global Empowerment Mission, and Mutual Aid LA’s efforts. It’s about so much more than just replacing stuff—it’s about rebuilding communities, and there’s a long road ahead.

I just wanted to check in and share what’s been on my mind—and, maybe more importantly, share a little care. And let’s not limit that to V-Day season, okay? Sending lots of love.

Take care,
Brooke
