The Commence Qs: Tennille Murphy

Tennille Murphy is one of our favorite online follows: when we say this woman glows, we mean from the inside out. The 46-year-old content creator, interior designer, and self-described “self-care guru” is clearly doing something right—so we put her in the hot seat for all the details on her hair routine, her personal joys, and her future plans.

Q: How often do you think about your hair?

A: 24/7. It’s fair to say that I can’t think about my day or routine without considering my hair. If I’m going to an event or traveling, the first thing on my mind is, what am I going to do with my hair? Weather, humidity, it’s all a factor. Since I only wash my hair once per week, I really need to keep my hair in mind when planning my schedule for the week. Yes, I even think about my hair at bedtime and wear a hair bonnet to keep my curls looking great.

Natural hair is emotional. While I love my curly white hair, I often feel beholden to it. My wash day routine is hours’ worth of washing, conditioning and diffusing. And with all that, no two days are alike.

Q: How are you using Commence?

A: I’ve recently started using the 2-in-1 Instant Shampoo. For me, even working out can be the end of wearing my hair down for the week. With the 2-in-1 Instant Shampoo, it nicely refreshes my curls after my workout, allowing me to extend my wash days. It does exactly what I need from an instant shampoo. My hair is refreshed and it relieves my itchy scalp. I also love that it gives my curls a voluminous finish.

Q: What brings you the most joy?

A: These days, I would have to say that taking a moment to recognize how far I’ve come in life brings me joy. As a teen mom, I really feel that my success has defied the odds of what was expected of me. I’m proud to have raised two beautiful, confident, and kind daughters.

Q: What is the best part of aging? What is the most challenging part?

A: The best part of aging is the confidence that comes with it. There’s something beautiful about no longer being concerned with other people’s opinions. I feel more confident in my choices and with setting healthy boundaries. The most challenging part is getting comfortable with the new version of my physical self. I’d love for my body to keep up with my mental self, but that’s not realistic. I’m still pretty active, but these days my body takes more time to recover and I have to remind myself to be more kind to my body.

Q: What most excites you about the future?

A: The unknown! Every time I put one foot in front of the other, a new door opens and I feel very fortunate to be living a life with so much potential. On a professional level, I feel like I’m just getting started and I’m looking forward to pushing myself to be fearless and bring to reality goals that I could never have dreamed of 10 years ago.

In some capacity, I hope to continue to be a source of inspiration and aspiration. I want to continue to help women live their best lives at any age.
